Map of Scranton Commons
I chose to observe the Scranton Commons tonight for a half hour to observe the eating habits of college students. I set out to determine how healthy they were. I was very curious to see if a student would choose to eat a healthy meal but then get desert as his or her treat. I was also looking to see if a student didn't worry about what he or she ate and instead chose what looked good including desert. I also watched to see what and how much boys ate compared to girls.

Here were my findings:

10 students were getting food at the world bar
6 students were getting sushi
12 students were at the salad bar
18 students were at the grill
20 students were at the home station (spaghetti and meatballs)
14 students were getting sandwiches (buffalo chicken panini)
24 students were getting pasta
15 students were in the ice cream line

Boys I chose to observe:
1) Salad, pulled pork sandwich, buffalo chicken panini
2) Salad, spaghetti and meatballs, cheese fries, cheese burger, cookies
3) Grilled chicken wrap, banana, french fries
4) Frosted mini wheat cereal, pizza
5) Chicken sandwich, french fries, protein bar, green beans
6) Pizza, cinnamon muffin top, corn dog, iced tea

Girls I chose to observe:
1) Corndog, sushi, ranch potato stuffer
2) Buffalo chicken panini, sushi, ice cream with reese pieces
3) Buffalo chicken panini, cinnamon muffin top, chocolate marshmallow ice cream
4) Peanut butter sandwich, cinnamon muffin top, salad
5) Salad, hot dog, cheese fries, vanilla ice cream
6) Cheeseburger, sushi, water, salad

After looking at these findings I have discovered first off that some boys eat a lot! All of the boys that I observed in the commons were also very fit and athletic looking. This could mean that because they possibly work out so much, they are able to eat the food they want to eat without it affecting them. However that being said there are also tiny girls who eat a lot of food. They may be athletes as well or they may just have fast metabolisms. There were some girls who ate healthy and didn't get desert either. This could simply mean that the person wants to be healthy, can't eat certain foods, or maybe even has body image issues, however this can't exactly be determined without asking them a few questions. I would like to investigate further into this to see why students at Bloomsburg eat the way they do. I plan on using this as my idea for my final clue project, to investigate further whether Bloomsburg is healthy or not, or somewhere in between. I believe that I will find that it all depends on the person but I will look into that.
